I am reading Patty McCord's book, Powerful and I am so happy I am. She is a rockstar, my HR idol, my hero! If I could meet her, I would bow down and kiss her feet. Here's why- She did everything at Netflix I always wanted to do in HR at previous companies I worked for but was not allowed to do! She did things I got in trouble for suggesting... I am only on chapter 1 and I won't review every chapter like I did with some other books but here is my Chapter 1 highlights. Patty does such a great job summarizing in her "in brief" section so she saves you time... plus I want anyone who owns a business or runs a department to pick up copies for yourself and your teams and hire me to facilitate good discussion to jump start yoir organization culture change so you can make more money! Trust me... they got it right at Netflix! Being in HR/Talent Management for over 10 years,  I know what she's doing is right and refreshing! I love you Patty! Here are some cha

What it takes to be a leader... my own views plus Chapter 4 Perks to Price in Leadershift by John C. Maxwell

Image
When I think of myself as a leader, this picture I took in Colorado Springs comes to mind- the huge mountain I climbed over a decade ago. When you are a leader,  it's always an uphill battle. It is hard to lead when you lead right because it is your actions that inspire people the most. I need to always be doing the right thing. Right now, it is costing me a lot to lead because I know that anything worth doing is not easy. If it were easy, everyone would lead. Looking at this picture and reading chapter 4, I think of the following: 1. Leaders never look back  (if you do, you may fall) 2. Climbing up is slow,  steady, and worth the patience because once you succeed, you can celebrate with the other people around you who were encouraging you. 3. It is scary!! Sometimes you walk up alone but you must be prepared to do that if you want to be a good leader. 4. Consistency is key 5. To reach your potential,  you must pay the price. 6. You must believe in yourself 7. There is h

Chapter 3 : Leadershift by John C. Maxwell, Goals to Growth, The Personal Development Shift

Image
This chapter is amazing. It truly proves how setting goals to achieve numbers is not enough and not the way to truly accomplish growth for your organization/business/self these days. If you seek to grow as a person, the numbers will follow on their own. Having launched my own business and am really putting myself out there now, I truly am focused on doing this business not for monetary numbers (make $425k per year) or popularity numbers (total blog views) but rather to grow my own skills and try to do something that has never been done before- make a change in this world for the better, inspire my 4 daughters and other struggling working Moms, etc. If I only focused on total blog views of around 4,500 to date, I would feel sad compared to those with millions of views but to me, I am growing and planting my seeds and helping at least one other person. To me, that is true value,  not some total blog view number! And this is exactly what this chapter alludes to. Pick up your copy

Chapter 2 Leadershift by Maxwell... Soloist to Conductor

Image
This chapter is about how you can get more from your people by giving more to them. Sow more seeds and get a better crop. Common sense yet the author makes a great point- if it's so common, why isn't everyone doing it now? Forget your own agenda and bring people along with you. Make beautiful music together! Here are a couple pics of my favorite parts of this chapter... and seriously,  buy this book! And we are the dreamers of the dreams!
