Leadershift by John C. Maxwell: Chapters 7 through 12

I am going to keep these chapter reviews short and sweet. I am ready to move on to the next author by March 1st so I can honor Women's History Month.

So here are each chapter's highlights according to me so we can finish this book:

Chapter 7- the shift is from Ladder Climbing to Ladder Building. "This leadershift is about changing from being a personal producer to an equipper of others."
  • Ladder stages:
    • How high can I climb? Know your strengths- take the Strengthsfinder quiz (Take Survey Here); know where you can improve; take steps every day to improve.
    • Ladder Holding
    • Ladder extending- ladder extenders are specialists
    • Ladder building-release people to lead on their own. Help others build their own ladder. Mentor others
  • Ladder Building:
    • 7 Capacities:
      • Energy
      • Emotional
      • Thinking
      • People
      • Creative
      • Production
      • Leadership
Chapter 8- Directing to Connecting- the Communication Shift
  • Directing vs. Connecting- good comparison chart in the book
  • "The goal of connecting is to find common ground with the leader initiating."
    • both people share, listen, learn, adjust, settle on a game plan, are valued, etc.
  • How do you connect?
    • Humility
    • Curiosity
    • Effort
    • Trustworthiness
    • Generosity
    • Listening
    • Encouragement- "give people oxygen for their soul."
Chapter 9 Discusses diversity... this discusses how we are all different and it is better to have a diverse team versus one group of people who think exactly the same.

Chapter 10- Positional Authority to Moral Authority- The Influence Shift
  • I like that he discusses character and how you should be "bigger on the inside than on the outside."
  • Integrity
  • Consistency
  • Authenticity
  • Humility
"Leaders of integrity do the right thing, even when it's hard, even when it's not best for them personally."

Chapter 11: Trained Leaders to Transformational Leaders- The Impact Shift
  • "If your actions inspire people to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, then you are a transformational leader."
Chapter 12: Career to Calling- the Passion Shift
  • "Some wake up to an alarm, some wake up to a calling." - unknown
  • This chapter is amazing!! Talks about what a calling is and how to discover yours...
My calling is to inspire other humans, especially mothers who have suffered through postpartum psychosis and anxiety while trying to keep a career like I did. I hope my story inspires many others to come out of their darkness and thrive.

Thanks for reading...

Peace and Love,
Coach Kerry
