Developing the Leader Within You 2.0- Influence

How do you define leadership? Who is a leader to you? What makes that person a leader?

The first part of John C. Maxwell's Leadership Model is Influence.

What is Influence? Here are some insights:

  • Sociologists estimate that even the most introverted individual will influence ten thousand other people during his or her lifetime
  • Everyone influences someone
  • We don't always know who or how much we influence- think about the people who influenced you in a powerful way, or the little things that meant a lot to you
  • The best investment in tomorrow is to develop your influence today- if you have the desire to accomplish something, you will be in a better place to do it if others are willing to help
  • In the book Power and Influence,  the three components of the "power triangle" are communication, recognition,  and influence
Influence can be developed into five stages called the 5 Levels of Leadership:
  1. Position- rights, follow because they have to
  2. Permission - relationships, want to follow
  3. Production - results
  4. People Development - reproduction
  5. Pinnacle - respect, people follow you because of who you are and what you represent
How do you develop the Influencer Within You?

Here are some tips:
  • Do your job with consistent excellence
  • Do more than expected
  • Accept Responsibility for yourself
  • Value the other person
  • Include the other person in your journey by shifting your focus from me to we
  • Make the other person's success your goal
  • Lead by example and produce results
  • Embrace the idea that people are your most valuable asset
  • Use your influence outside the organization to make a difference
